In Memoriam

“Oh, yet we trust that somehow good
Will be the final goal of ill.” – Lord Tennyson, In Memoriam

Artcore has a year long project called In Our Thoughts. As part of it I was invited to take part in the artist postcard exhibition and auction called In Memoriam, creating work which thoughtfully reflected on the COVID situation.

Accompanying poem:

This Wave of Darkness Shall Pass

This wave of darkness feels all consuming,

And crashes loudly,

Pushing us under with its force.

It makes us gasp for air,

Clasping in desperation,

Thinking this is OUR end,

But it is not.

As we look up through the murky waters,

We glimpse the stars,

Our hands outstretch,

Towards them,

As if WE could pull ourselves out from THIS?

You precious who have passed feel as numerous as those stars,

Whose lives have shined as brightly…

But there is a golden light,

Which weaves through the dark waters.

A glimmer at first,

As through a curtain at first light.

Then a ray,

Growing brighter,

As the light of our first dawn.

It dispels the darkness,

Making us squint with its radiance,

And we can breathe,

Breathe,

Breathe deep once again.

But what shall WE learn from this?

Having known the darkest of days and the brightest of lights?
